What a great story Elizabeth and an inspiration to us all to get the facts and help avoid yet another species extinction.

I am happy to hear that there are groups like Birdlife International that are doing something about the problem. I enjoy vultures and we have many here in Northern California where their numbers seem to be increasing (only by my observations).

I will write a post for my readers with links so they can contribute if they are so inclined.

That’s such a nice summary. I have seen vultures (recently) at Kanha and Bharatpur in India, but then they were a rare find.

Lets hope their future is brighter.

Thank you for this informative post. Amazing, the cause and the important interdependence you describe in this culture. I’m glad captive breeding is underway. So often by the time we realize the decline, it is very hard to reverse. But there is hope. Hats off to those who are working hard to helps these vulture populations.

Thanks for this wonderful look at one of my favorite birds, vultures. They’re not sexy–we want to look away–but they provide such an incredible service of cleaning up after everybody. Do the Asian vultures also circle gracefully on air currents? I remember when I did wildlife rehab a number of years ago, the vultures were extremely pissy; you had to put their food down and get out fast. But what a treat to watch them–and even more of a treat, to listen to them–walking around their enclosure. Their feathers rustled louder than those of other birds, as if they were shuffling along in Victorian skirts.

Thanks for this informative post. I’ve known about the plight of the vultures for some time now and have occasionally blogged about it too, and written a poem for them. It’s appalling to think that they might become extinct..
