It’s wonderful to have more and more pieces published online and in-print. But it also feels a bit disembodied. If I’m lucky, I may exchange a few emails or have a phone conversation with an editor. I never meet the others whose pieces share the same binding with me. It’s all understandable given how busy the world is, but still odd.
So I was delighted I could fit into an Arizona trip a stop in LA to participate in The Truth About the Fact publication salon at Loyola Marymount University. I enjoyed an afternoon on the beach in Santa Monica and read from “Fieldnotes on Flooding in Nepal” (published in their spring 2009 issue) that evening. Editor Michael Datcher and his enthusiastic staff arranged a wonderful event that combined words, music, food, and wine to remind us how much witnessing and writing about it matter.
