A hint of spring weather in Portland this morning gave way to rain, ruining my plans to transplant herbs and clean up the yard. So I started tomatoes under grow lights indoors.

- Starting Tomatoes
They have many challenges ahead: a six hour ride to our property in Eastern Oregon in May, a month or more in cold frames and frost blankets at 3800 feet, a summer of unpredictable mountain weather, and September frosts. But I chose hardy varieties, including some heirlooms from Siberia, that with some coddling should ripen. High Altitude Gardens has a great selection.
For environmental and aesthetic reasons, I don’t eat many tomatoes in the off-season. So I’m already looking forward to these tiny seeds delivering. But August is still months away.
Gardening: a good way to practice patience.
