It was the howling and yipping of coyotes on the edge of the Grande Ronde canyon a few years ago that confirmed for me a need to get closer to the wild.
Light Snow in February
My partner and I bought some property near the same canyon, put up a yurt, and are making plans for a permaculture farm. A visit this past week to our place, a Fishtrap conference on “Re-Imagining the Wild,” the schizophrenia of late winter weather (sun, rain, hail, snow) make it all seem more complicated but no less exciting. There will be plenty to do and ponder in the years to come: water systems, fruit trees, weed control, solar greenhouse, waste management, livestock. I have to cultivate more patience for our ever-growing list of projects.
Coyote is still calling, but I will have to mind the chickens too.
