Bald Eagle, Sandy River Delta
So many birds today on the Sandy River Delta, including two bald eagles. One flew overhead, landed in a cottonwood tree by the Columbia River shore, screeched and flapped its wings at another already in the tree. Courtship perhaps. The water has receded a lot over the last few weeks, turning up dead fish and lots of stinky organic matter: a rich hunting ground for the eagles as well as small hawks, cormorants, buffleheads, coots, geese, and gulls.
I had the camera along and snapped a lot of photos but will need a larger zoom lens to get good close-ups of distant birds. But playing with the camera brought back pleasant memories of my geeky teen years when my favorite hobbies included birdwatching and taking black and white photos of water birds.
The fresh air, the birds and the reminiscing made for a relaxing day. Makes me wonder if I should add serious birdwatching and nature photography to my growing list of activities I should get back into.
